Description

SORWATHE is an award-winning tea factory in Rwanda, founded in 1975 by Joe Wertheima. The company was invited by the Rwandan government to build a tea factory in Kinihira. However, there were very few arable lands available for tea cultivation. The government therefore drained an experimental plot in the Cyohoha swamp and planted tea bushes there.

The success of this plantation demonstrated that tea could be grown profitably in reclaimed marshlands. Mr. Wertheim worked with the government to secure funding for the SORWATHE factory. The construction of the factory began in 1975 and tea production started in 1978.

Today, SORWATHE produces approximately 12% of Rwanda's tea. It is also the first tea factory in Rwanda to produce green tea, as well as the first to cultivate organic tea in the country. The tea processed by the factory is grown on the 284-hectare plantation owned by SORWATHE, as well as on an additional 930 hectares owned by ASSOPTHE, a Rwandan cooperative representing over 3,500 small farmers.

SORWATHE employs 3,000 Rwandans in the factory and fields. It produces approximately 6.5 million pounds (3 million kilograms) of high-quality black, green, oolong, organic, and specialty teas each year for sale worldwide.
