Dokmai Rwanda is a company that creates handmade artisanal products with passion in Rwanda by skilled and highly motivated leather artisans, most of whom are trained in-house and on the job. The company encourages these artisans to offer their own new designs and ideas, as well as to improve the quality of the products they make. Although new to Rwanda, Dokmai has its roots in Laos.

For eight years, Dokmai produced fair trade handmade goods, specializing in hand-woven and naturally dyed silk products, following both traditional styles and fashion trends.

In 2014, Bernadette Umunyana left Southeast Asia and decided to launch a new artisanal business aimed at attracting international attention to the beauty of Rwanda by promoting exquisite artisanal products inspired by the splendor of the land of a thousand hills.

After conducting a survey of the existing local handicraft market and potential opportunities and niches, Umunyana decided that the leather fashion sector was the most promising for attracting local and international customers. Today, Dokmai Rwanda is advancing a "Made in Rwanda" aesthetic by working with local artisans who use local raw materials.
